Answer to your Health Question

Question:

I take Levothyroxine as soon as I wake up.

I also take calcium.

I need to fit in two doses of Prevacid and Carafate.

How do I do this?

What I am doing now is take the calcium around 10 and the Prevacid at 11 before lunch.

I take the Carafate at 3:00.

I get my second Prevacid before bedtime.

Thank you for any advice you can give me.

Tere

Answer:

Dear Tere,

Patients using Levothyroxine and calcium should separate them by sufficient time to prevent interaction.

Use calcium at least 4 hours before or 4 hours after you take levothyroxine.

Use sucralfate (Carafate) at least 4 hours before or 4 hours after you take levothyroxine.

There are no known interactions between levothyroxine and Prevacid (lansoprazole).

If you also take sucralfate (Carafate), avoid taking it at the same time you take Prevacid.

Sucralfate can make it harder for your body to absorb Prevacid. Wait at least 30 minutes after taking Prevacid before you take sucralfate.
