Answer to your Health Question

Question: There are brown spots on the bottom of my feet. What may cause this? Angie

Answer: Dear Angie,

If the brown spots you mention are also hard and thick skin, they may be calluses. A callus appears when there is too much pressure and friction in a certain area of the foot, usually from wearing shoes that are too tight.

Also, with time, the skin on the back of the foot hardens and may change color, looking brownish or yellowish.

If the brown spots are accompanied by pain, itching and/or peeling, a visit to the dermatologist is recommended.
