Answer: Dear Annette,

Transverse myelitis is a syndrome caused by the inflammation of the spinal cord. It is referred as idiopathic when there is no known cause for it, but it is believed to occur when the immune system is abnormally stimulated and attacks the spinal cord.

Common symptoms include:

- Back pain
- Bowel and bladder disfunction
- Weakness
- Tingling and numbness
