Answer to your Health Question

Question: Is it normal for a 3 year old not to wake up if she has to go to the restroom? Example: At church she fell asleep and did not awake when needed to go and slept right through. Monica

Answer: Dear Monica,

Children that are deep sleepers can suffer more from bedwetting as it is harder for them to wake up from their sleep. Urinary incontinence in small children is quite common. As kids grow older their bodies mature and the following happen:

- Bladder capacity increases
- Child learns how to respond to body's signals when is time to urinate
- An overactive bladder settles down

After age 5, most cases of incontinence in children start to dissapear.
