Answer to your Health Question

Question: Should I be worried with a total cholesterol of 139 but a HDL level of 18? Chris

Answer: Dear Chris,

Normal levels of HDL cholesterol are between 40 to 50 mg/dL in men and between 50 to 60 mg/dL in women. Low levels of HDL cholesterol are associated with a high risk for heart disease.

Common causes of low HDL cholesterol include smoking, being overweight and being sedentary.
