Question: I had cervical cancer so 2 weeks ago I had it cut away. Since then I've been having infections. I got rushed into the hospital and had a scan that showed I got few white cell. Stomach has been swollen since and in pain. What does the low count of white cells mean? Vicky

Answer: Dear Vicky,

You low level of white blood cells is probably due to the infections you've been suffering from. Other common causes of low white cells include:

- Autoimmune disorders, such as lupus
- Certain medications, especially those used in chemotherapy and some antibiotics
- Radiation therapy
- Bone marrow disease, such as leukemia or myelodysplastic syndromes
