Question: What are electrolytes? How can they affect your health if it has showen up to be a problem in your blood? Ann

Answer: Dear Ann,

Electrolytes are the minerals that help keep the human body's fluid levels in balance and help the muscles, heart and other organs work properly.

A test for electrolytes measures the levels of sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate.

In some people, the levels of electrolytes can be too low or too high. Depending on the type of mineral which levels are high or low, different health problems may occur.
