Answer to your Health Question

Question: I had a very swollen ear and kept getting sharp pains. Now I have green fluid coming out of it. I've had ear drops and penicillin but still the fluid flows. This has been going on now for 2 weeks and now my eye is very sore as well. Charlie

Answer: Dear Charlie,

The symptoms you mention are common of a chronic ear infection. Treatment is usually focused on relief of symptoms and cure of the infection.

Antibiotics may be prescribed if the infection appears bacterial. Antibiotic treatment is usually long-term and may be oral or in the form of antibiotic ear drops if there is a hole in the eardrum.

A chronic ear infection usually responds to treatment, but treatment may take several months. The disorder is usually not a threat to life but may be uncomfortable and may result in serious complications. In certain cases, surgery is recommended.
