Answer to your Health Question

Question: My husband has a fungus on his feet that seems to be impossible to clear up. He has taken a course of Lamisil but the doctor did not say how long it would take for it to work. Could you recommend something else for him to try? Vera

Answer: Dear Vera,

Lamisil is a medication that works by helping the nail grow free of infection, slowly replacing the infected portion of the nail. This medication is usually taken for 6 to 12 weeks and results are not seen till the end of the treatment, until the nails grows back completely. It may take 4 to 12 months to eliminate an infection. ]

All other oral medications to treat nail fungus take the same amount of time to completely cure the fungus, since the nail needs to grow back completely.

Keep in mind that the infection can reoccur, especially if the nail is exposed to warm, moist conditions.
