Answer to your Health Question

Question (05/02/2011):

Title: Interaction between mirtazapine and tyrosine.

Hi there. I'm a 27 year old male who was diagnosed with R+R MS 4 years ago.

I'm currently taking 30mg mirtazapine on an evening.

I was just wondering whether it was safe to take L Tyrosine at the same time.

I'm seeing my GP this week to discuss coming off the Mirtazapine but would like a head start with mood improvement that the l tyrosine may give me.

Thank you.

Dear Dom,

Mirtazapine has a tetracyclic chemical structure unrelated to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, tricyclics or monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI).

Tyrosine may cause a severe increase in blood pressure in people taking MAOIs.

L-tyrosine can potentially interact with medications that contain levodopa and with thyroid medications

Mirtazapine may trigger psychosis during chronic levodopa therapy.

Mirtazapine can potentially interact with Benzodiazepines, Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRI, Triptans, CYP 3A4 Inducers, CYP 3A4 Inhibitors and Sibutramine
