Answer to your Health Question

Question (07/30/2013):

Title: What is the maximum dosage of Xanax a person can take safely?

Four years ago before my doctors discovered hypothyroidism my doctor put me on 1mg of xanax 4 a day for panic attacks.

2 yrs later the dosage was increased to 2mgs 3 times a day because I had built up a tolerance.

I have been on the 2 mgs 3 times a day for 2 times a day and I am becoming tolerant of that dosage as well.

What is the maximum safe dosage of xanax a person can take safely?

Answer:

Thank you very much for your question.

Maximum daily dose of 4 mg, given in divided doses.

For patients receiving doses greater than 4 mg/day, periodic reassessment and consideration of dosage reduction is advised.

In a controlled postmarketing dose-response study, patients treated with doses of XANAX greater than 4 mg/day for 3 months were able to taper to 50% of their total maintenance dose without apparent loss of clinical benefit.
