Answer to your Health Question

Question (07/24/2012):

Title: Microdiscectomy, Flexaril and erectile dysfunction.

My husband had microdiscectomy of the L5-S1 on May 30th to relieve pressure on the s1 and l5 nerve.

They put him on Norco for the pain and Flexaril for the muscle relaxant.

In the last couple of weeks he has experienced a lot of irritability and inability to get or maintain an erection and even if he does manage it he can't seem to achieve release.

Could it be one or both medications causing this?

Brenda

Answer:

Dear Brenda,

Anxiety is a side effect of Norco.

Irritability, agitation and nervousness are side effects of Flexeril.

Norco contains a combination of acetaminophen and hydrocodone.

Anxiety is a side effect of hydrocodone

Nerve root damage is a risk and potential complication associated with a lumbar discectomy (microdiscectomy).

This complication is quite rare.

Nerve damage during a discectomy is very uncommon, but has been reported in about 1 in 1,000 cases.

Surgical intervention for a number of different conditions may damage nerves, or impair blood supply.

Surgery may damage the nerves and blood vessels involved in erection.

Parasympathetic nerves are necessary for erection and sympathetics for ejaculation.

Both the sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves have an intimate relationship with the sacrum.

The lumbosacral Joint or L5-S1 is where the lumbar spine meets the sacrum.

Cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril) is a muscle relaxant that may cause erectile dysfunction (ED).
