Can I take Tums every now and then for heartburn if I take metoprolol and hydrochlorothiazide?

Answer:

As probably you know one of the side effects of metoprolol, a beta-blocker, is heartburn.

Calcium salts decreases the therapeutic effect of metoprolol.

Tums is calcium carbonate.

Calcium carbonate is an inorganic salt.

Hydrochlorothiazide may raise calcium levels.

A study of 1979 by Hakim R, Tolis G, Goltzman D et al., indicated that calcium carbonate and hydrochlorothiazide therapy may be associated with severe hypercalcemia.
