Answer to your Health Question

Question:

Can the use of laxatives like phenolphthalein and Metamucil affect the absorption of calcium?
Lydia

Answer:

Dear Lydia,

Doctors Heaney RP and Weaver CM. from Osteoporosis Research Center, Creighton University, Omaha, NE, found that Psyllium in the form of Metamucil makes little practical difference to availability of co-ingested calcium when ingested at typical therapeutic doses.

Doctors Aldo Trovato, Dale N. Nuhlicek and John E. Midtling say that excessive use of phenolphthalein-containing laxatives decreases vitamin D and calcium absorption.
