Question (01/20/2013):

Title: How to space out my meds.

I take Levothyroxine once daily, Citalopram once daily Ranitidine twice daily Fexofenadine twice daily.

Last month they added Carafate suspension x4 and Bethanechol x3 and Dexilant once daily.

This week I started Forteo injections once daily.

He also wants me to take calicum and Vitamin D daily.

How do I schedule all these in.

Answer:

Dear LouAnn,

Thank you very much for your question.

Levothyroxine usually is taken once a day on an empty stomach, one half to one hour before breakfast.

Citalopram is usually taken once a day, in the morning or in the evening, with or without food.

Ranitidine is usually taken once a day at bedtime or two to four times a day.

Fexofenadine is usually taken with water once or twice a day.

Fexofenadine will work better if it is not taken with fruit juices such as orange, grapefruit, or apple juice.

Take fexofenadine at around the same time(s) every day.

Sucralfate (Carafate) usually is taken four times a day, 1 hour before meals and at bedtime.

Take sucralfate on an empty stomach, 2 hours after or 1 hour before meals.

Dexlansoprazole (Dexilant) is usually taken once a day. Dexlansoprazole may be taken with or without food, but it may provide more relief from after-meal symptoms if it is taken before a meal. Take dexlansoprazole at around the same time every day.

Bethanechol usually is taken two to four times a day.

Bethanechol usually is taken at evenly spaced intervals during the day.

Take this medication on an empty stomach (at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after meals) to prevent stomach upset.

Teriparatide injection (Forteo®)comes as a solution (liquid) to inject subcutaneously (under the skin) in your thigh or lower stomach area. This medication comes in prefilled dosing pens.

It is usually injected once a day for up to 2 years.

To help you remember to use teriparatide injection, use it at around the same time every day.

Calcium can interfere with thyroid hormone replacement treatment.

Separate calcium and thyroid medications by at least 4 hours.

You should take your vitamins right after a healthy breakfast.

Vitamins cannot be properly absorbed into your system without complimentary foods for them to bond with.
