Answer to your Health Question

Question (01/02/2012):

Title: Delivery after surgery for fibroid .

Implication of second surgery for fibroid

Can one still deliver through natural way after second surgery for fibroid or must it be cesarean?

How many children can one bear after these two surgeries?

Momo

Answer:

Dear Momo,

After myomectomy (surgery where fibroids are removed but the uterus stays intact), a cesarean section may be needed for delivery. This depends in part on where and how big the myomectomy incision is.

Myomectomy is the only fibroid treatment that may improve your chances of having a baby.

In the case of abdominal myomectomy, a vaginal birth can still be an option for many women; however most doctors will automatically schedule a c-section without presenting any other options, not because it's safer or better for you, but because they're afraid of liability

C-section does not guarantee a better outcome and has significant risks of its own, especially if you plan on having more children.
