Answer to your Health Question

Question: My son who is 35 had his adenoids removed at 18 months because they were enlarged. He has sleep apnea and quits breathing 23 times. I want to know if your adenoids can grow back in pieces when removed at an early age? I heard your tonsils can grow back in pieces. And does he need to tell his doctor about this? Carol

Answer: Dear Carol,

In rare cases, adenoid tissue can grow back but it usually does not cause any problems. Only enlarged, infected adenoids can cause problems such as sleep apnea.

Other causes of sleep apnea include:

- Obesity
- Irregular sleep hours
- Family history
- Enlarged tongue
- Receded chin
-
Hypothyroidism
