Answer to your Health Question

Question: I suffer from a very dry mouth. I have cut down on my salt intake. I take HRT and thyroxine. Could these be the problem? Kay

Answer: Dear Kay,

Hormone replacement therapy and thyroxine do not usually cause dry mouth. Medications for hot flashes, such as Clonidine, have side effects such as dry mouth.

Other causes of a dry mouth include:

- Depression
- Anxiety
- Sjogren's Syndrome
- Alzheimer's
- Endocrine disorders

People that smoke or chew tobacco can also suffer from dry mouth as well as people that sleep with their mouths open and have snoring problems.
