Thank you for your information.

Answer:

Thank you very much for your question.

Pentosan polysulfate (Elmiron) can raise GGT and ALT levels.

Elmiron raises GGT and ALT levels.

The web site of Elmiron manufacturer, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., indicates:

-Tell your doctor:
o If you have any liver problems.

And:

The most common side effects are hair loss, diarrhea, nausea, blood in the stool, headache, rash, upset stomach, abnormal liver function tests.

Examples of medications that may cause elevations of liver enzymes include the statins (used in treating high blood cholesterol levels) some antibiotics, some antidepressants, and some medications used for treating diabetes, tacrine (Cognex), aspirin, and quinidine.

Fast food, pesticides, toxins and pollutants can elevate ALT levels

In a long-term study involving more than 160,000 Austrian adults, the researchers found that the higher a person's blood level of GGT, the greater the risk of cardiovascular death.

According to the senior author of the study, Hanno Ulmer, two mechanisms might explain why GGT can indicate cardiovascular disease. The first, originally proposed by the Italian researchers, is that high GGT shows the presence of atherosclerosis. The second is that it's related to the ill effects of heavy drinking on blood vessels.

Van Hemelrijck M, Jassem W, Walldius G, Fentiman IS, Hammar N, Lambe M, Garmo H, Jungner I, and Holmberg L., found evidence of associations between elevated GGT and risk of developing different cancers. The strength of this association may vary by glucose levels because hyperglycaemia can result in oxidative stress initiating damaging pathways of carcinogenesis.

The evidence was found in a large Swedish cohort with 37,809 primary cancers.

It is unknown up today what happen with high GGT and ALT levels caused by drugs but not caused by a disease.

FDA and the manufacturer know that Elmiron raises GGT and ALT levels.
