Answer:

Dear Ademuyiwa,

The reasons most frequently associated with itching in the anus are:

-Diseases of anus and rectum, as fissures (ulcer) fistulae (holes) and anal hemorrhoids.

-Skin diseases like psoriasis eczema and seborrheic dermatitis.

-Infections in the area, particularly fungi

-Parasites: worms (in children), scabies and pubic lice can cause intense itching in the anus and surrounding area.

-Antibiotics such as tetracycline or erythromycin are associated with the appearance of anal itching.

-Diabetes.

-Hygiene: both poor hygiene and excessive cleaning (with gels and soaps) in the area may cause irritation and itching.

-Diet: certain foods, like citrus, tomatoes and chocolate, and beverages such as coffee, tea, beer and cola, may be associated with the appearance of this symptom.

-In some cases anxiety and other psychological causes may also be involved

In most cases no specific cause is found.
