Title:
Isthmic spondylolisthesis grade one .
Will
Isthmic spondylolisthesis ever heal if it is a grade one?
Matt
Answer:
Dear
Matt,
It depends
on the severity.
If the
bone does not press any nerve you may never have a recurrence of back
pain.
Treatment
for grade one spondylolisthesis includes staying away from all strenuous
activity until the pain and muscle spasm subside.
X-rays
should be repeated every 4-6 months to rule out successive slippage.
Sometimes
the use of orthosis may be an indicated treatment.
Conservative
treatment for grade I spondylolisthesis is successful in 80 percent
of cases.
Spinal
fusion surgery is performed in cases with nerve root irritation, significant
slippage (grade III and higher) and progression of the slip.
It is
not allowed contact sports, skiing or gymnastics after the surgery.
