Answer to your Health Question

My doctor has suggested taking combination of Arogyavardhini ras, Cinchona, Alstonia Scholaris and Papaya for Dengue fever.

So is it Ok to take this combination as I came to know that these drugs reduce the platelet counts drastically?

The composition of Arogyavardhini Ras is:

Katuki (Picrorhiza kurroa), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Bibhitaki (Terminalia belerica), Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Chitrak (Plumbago zeylanica), Guggulu (Commiphora mukul), Lauha bhasma, Abhrak bhasma, Tamra bhasma, Shilajit (Asphaltum purified) and Kajjali.

Picrorhiza kurroa also contains apocynin, a powerful anti-inflammatory agent, which also reduces platelet aggregation.

'Haritaki' in combination with another two herbs 'Amla' and 'Bahera' makes the famous Ayurvedic preparation 'Triphala'

Gallic acid, a major polyphenol in Triphala, has antioxidant property. Triphala also increased the reactive oxygen species (ROS) in breast cancer cells (MCF-7 and T-47D), resulting in apoptosis.

Terminalia chebula, one of the components of Triphala, was shown to be a potent hyaluronidase and collagenase inhibitor that prevented degradation of cartilage. Triphala also protected mice from radiation-induced mortality. Oral administration of Triphala enhanced the immune functions in rats.

In addition, to having laxative and astringent properties, recent scientific studies have shown Terminalia Belerica to be a powerful adaptogen. An adaptogen is a hypothetical treatment or prescription for health. A healthy lifestyle is the one indisputable example of an adaptogen.

Terminalia Belerica is generally regarded as safe for everyday consumption.

The research done by Sharma H. Feng Y, Panganamala RV and Maharishi Amrit Kalash, has indicated that Amalaki may reduce the risk of blood clots by reducing stickiness of platelets.

Chitrak (Plumbago zeylanica) stimulates the central nervous system in small doses; however, larger doses can cause paralysis that can lead to death, and it can cause the abortion of a fetus, dead or alive. Due to its effects, Plumbago zeylanica should never be used by young children, nursing women, or those with sever liver or kidney disease

Guggulu (Commiphora mukul) has shown to reduce the stickiness of platelets.

Lauha bhasma has decreased platelet volume in toxicity and recovery studies ofayurvedic preparations.

Abhrak bhasma is a commonly used ayurvedic drug against many diseases including hepatitis.

Tamra bhasma, prepared from metallic copper is a famous ayurvedic preparation.
It is a versatile drug and specially recommended for all sorts of complaints

Shilajit (Asphaltum purified) purifies blood.

Kajjali implies to black sulphide of Mercury. In terms of Ayurveda alchemy, Kajjali is the alchemical child from which most of the other alchemical substances are created.

Cinchona bark seems to be safe for most people when used appropriately. However, in large amounts, cinchona is unsafe and can be deadly. Symptoms of overdose include ringing of the ears, headache, nausea, diarrhea, and vision disturbances.

Cinchona can also cause bleeding and allergic reactions, including hives and fever.

The chemomodulatory activity of Alstonia scholaris extract (ASE) has been studied in combination with berberine hydrochloride (BCL), a topoisomerase inhibitor.

When 180 mg/kg of ASE or Alstonia scholaris extract was combined with differentdoses of BCL (2-12 mg/kg), a dose-dependent increase in the anticancer activity was observed up to 8 mg/kg of BCL.

However, a further increase in the BCL dose to 10 and 12 mg/kg resulted in toxic side effects.
