Answer: Dear Martha,

There are many causes that can result in hand numbness. Examples are:

- Hand stays in the same position for a long period of time
- Lack of blood flow to the affected area
- Nerve injury
- Pressure of the spinal nerves
- Abnormal levels of calcium, sodium or potassium
- Certain medications

Conditions such as diabetes and multiple sclerosis can result in numbness of different parts of the body.

It is usually recommended to exercise the affected area so it keeps active. If the numbness persists for a long period of time visit your doctor.
