Question: I have a rash extending
upward from my scrotum around the inside of my thighs. I first noticed
it after wearing a new bathing suit with sandpants. It burned and
itched for severals days but now is only red and itchy. This is now
the third week with this and the only remedy I'm using currently is
Gold Bond creme. I'm 52 years old and in good health. I have not had
sex within the past three years so I'm not concerned there. Any ideas?
Treatment plan? Mark
Answer: Dear Mark,
Rashes can be caused by many different
reasons. Common causes include:
- Poison ivy
- Chemicals, soaps, detergents
- Insect bites/stings
- Medications
- Eczema
- Psoriasis
- Shingles
Rashes usually improve by themselves
with time and some simple care tips:
- Avoid scrubbing skin
- Use warm water for cleaning
- Exposed the affected area to air as much as possible
Hydrocortisone cream (1%) is also
recommended for rashes and does not need a prescription. A rash can
take weeks to completely disappear. If symtoms get worse it is recommended
that you visit a doctor.
