Question: What would cause my stomach to have pain about 3 or 4 inches above my navel right in the middle of my stomach. It feels like a knife going in sometimes, and lasts a short duration and then comes right back in a matter of about a minute or two. Margaret

Answer: Dear Margaret,

Stomach pains are also known as abdominal pains and altough they are usually felt in the stomach area, they may actually come from another area in the body (colon, appendix ...). Common causes for abdominal pain include:

- Lack of bowel movements
- Irritable bowel syndrome
- Ulcers
- Infection
- Hernia
- Food poisoning
- Appendicitis
- Indigestion
