Answer to your Health Question

Question: I fell sideways on my knee one and a half years ago and heard a riping noise. It's a reoccuring injury and it happened again last night. I ended up in A&E but after the x-ray they couldn't check my ligaments and tendons due to the pain. Do I need a operation? Its swollen and very difficult to walk. Thank you Sian.

Answer: Dear Sian,

After your doctors analyze your x-rays, they should be able to diagnose the exact problem. The symptoms you mention are common of a meniscus injury. When knee injuries are not treated properly they can reappear again and again, usually being more painful than the first time.

If the meniscus is injured, treatment varies depending on the damage and in certain cases surgery is needed.
