Answer to your Health Question

Question: Right leg between ankle and knee, severe itching rash redness and swelling. Need cause and remedy for this problem. I had the identical problem 2 months ago. My doctor treated it with antibiotics and prescribed hydrocortisone 1% cream. This problem reoccurs at least twice a year. The itch always lingers on. Thanks for any information you may provide for this ailment. Darold,

Answer: Dear Darold,

The symptoms you mention may be related to eczema, an inflammation of the skin that is usually accompanied by dryness, redness and specially itching. This condition occurs in children and adults and although there is no clear cause for this condition it usually affects families prone to allergies.

It is recommended to follow certain steps in order to prevent outbreaks:

- Moisturize the skin frequently
- Reduce stress
- Do not use harsh soaps, detergents
- Analyze if outbreaks occur after eating something in particular. If so, do not eat that specific food.
- Avoid sweating and overheating

The most common treatment for eczema is the use of creams that offer relief against itching and keeps the skin moisturized.
